Courtney Cohen, LMHC, is a licensed mental health counselor with experience working with adolescents, adults, and families in both private practice and school mental health center settings. Most of her clinical work focuses on anxiety, interpersonal conflict/difficulties, mood disorders, emotional regulation, life transitions, and lasting impacts of trauma and past experiences.
She takes an integrative approach to her clinical work, addressing both how the symptoms are presenting today while also getting a sense of what is underlying the symptoms and causing them in the first place. Courtneys style is warm, collaborative, compassionate, and authentic. Her approach is grounded in relational psychotherapy, and heavily informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS). With additional trainings in CBT and DBT, Courtney often brings in tools from this knowledge base when helpful. The work often looks like beginning with developing coping skills and building awareness, and then moving into deeper, more depth oriented work to understand what is underlying the clients symptoms – where it was learned, how is it getting enforced. Drawing on contemporary psychodynamic approaches informed by IFS, Courtney places a strong emphasis on early life experiences and the behaviors we developed to keep ourselves safe that may no longer serve us in the same way.
